What Happened To The Tan M&M ?
M&M aficionados will notice what is missing from this collection of M&M recipes and crafts. The tan M&M! Remember the tan M&M? Yes? Kinda? Was the tan M&M a myth?
No, the tan M&M did exist. However, the tan M&M was not an original color when M&M’s were introduced in 1941. Purple was the original tan! Who knew? Just for the record I’d prefer purple or tan over blue M&M’s.
So Where Did The Blue M&M Come From?
The blue M&M has been with us since 1995. Mars ran a promotion to replace the tan M&M with either blue, pink or purple M&M’s. Blue won with 54% of the 10 million votes cast!
The M&M website (2008) stated that milk chocolate M&M’s should contain:
- 24% blue
- 20% orange
- 16% green
- 14% brown
- 14% yellow
- 13% red M&M’s
My color distribution of M&M’s in a snack size bag with a total of 57 M&M’s:
- 31.6 % orange (18)
- 24.6 % blue (14)
- 15.8% red (9)
- 10.5% green (6)
- 8.8% brown (5)
- 8.8% yellow (5)
My bag obviously had an orange M&M explosion in numbers, but the color distribution is not per bag. It has been reported that M&M’s are manufactured in two different plants with a different distribution of colors: stat fans can review the results here.
But beforewarned before you crack open the next bag of M&M’s and start color counting. Each package may or may not have the prescribed color percentage of M&M’s; many have counted and many have lost the battle. The color distribution will approximate M&M’s percentages per package.

So I am not imagining an assault by the blue M&M. My own very unscientific study reveals the following color preference of M&M connoisseurs:

- Green is the favorite color at 45 percent
- Red is the second preferred color at 22 percent
- Blue is least preferred at 13 percent
Not to be deterred, there are quite a few college stat courses which have researched and analyzed the color distribution of M&Ms per package, per type of M&M. Many of these results can be found online.
How Do You Eat Your M&M’s?
- Do you grab a handful without color discrimination?
- Do you pick out certain colors first to eat?
- Do you flex between your favorite colors and just grab a handful?
- Do you separate the colors because the M&M’s will be be used in an M&M craft?
My next poll of unscientific friends reveals the majority of people eat their M&M’s by the handful with ill regard to color.There are a few combo connoisseurs in the group who flex between choosing a color or eating by the indiscriminate handful. I personally choose to donate blue M&M to my friends, I know such rebellion!
